The Visual Agile Coach Personal Development Canvas

This is the first Canvas in the Visual Agile Coach Playbook and an important one – as its for You!

Why Create a Personal Development Canvas

If it’s not written down it doesn’t happen. It’s a good rule of thumb. A Personal Development Canvas is better than just writing it down, use it to logically set out all the components of your personal development, piecing them together into a comprehensive big picture.

When to Create a Personal Development Canvas

  • Whenever you want – there’s no better time than now!

  • Starting out – new job, new sector, new career

  • Rebooting – we’re never too old to learn something new.

How to Create a Personal Development Canvas

Whilst some canvases have a fixed layout, the Personal Development Canvas can be as individual as You are. Whether it’s the structure or the content, tailor it as you like. Here’s some ideas.

The left side is for planning, the right side for doing. Across the top is a timeline or personal development roadmap. In the middle your ‘Why’ or ‘Mission’.

Left side: maybe you want to complete a personal SWOT assessment or set out SMART goals and Objectives for your personal development or list the nuts and bolts: skills required, training and qualifications to complete and learning activities.

Right side: define Objectives and Key Results to drive and measure your personal development plus a Backlog (to do, doing, done) to manage activities and load (it’s OK to limit work in progress!)

Across the top: Plot your personal development journey, dates for experiences or examinations, a timeline from current job to next job. Or following the Visual Agile Coach’s Discover, Develop, Do pathway. Set your own timeline and milestones or checkpoints.

In the Middle: “Start with Why” or your personal development Mission Statement or craft your own User Story:

“As an Agile Coach I want to increase the effectiveness of my communications with the power of visuals to motivate and engage my team so that we all deliver more value”.

Visual Agile Coaching Tips

  • Use words or pictures to fill out the Canvas. Bring your personal development journey to life with motivating and vibrant but clear visual intent.

  • Use with the Visual Agile Coach Tools such as the Piste Map for Growth and the Super Powers Rocket

  • Your Personal Development Canvas grows with you as a living document, interact with it, keep it up to date, pivot and refocus as required. Personal development is not linear. If you’re losing focus or direction revisit and get back on track.
